January 6, 1993 marked the beginning of a new era in the regulation of nutritional labelling in the United States. The new regulations specify what information must be on the label, the format in which it must be presented, standardized serving sizes, definitions of descriptive terms such as "lean" and "low fat", and health claims that can be made regarding the relationship between nutrients or food and health. The FDA has specified that all packaged food products sold in the United States must be labelled according to the new regulations.

In 1998, Health Canada initiated a review of its policies on nutritional labelling resulting in recommendations to adopt a nutritional format very similar to the United States label. The final regulations came into place on January 1, 2003. This new regulation requires mandatory nutritional labelling for retail food products and the core information expanded from just calories, protein, fat and carbohydrate to also include saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, fibre, sugar, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, calcium and iron. All products must be labelled by December 12, 2005.

We provide food safety on covering all areas required for formal regulatory compliance, for the fulfillment of QMPI commitments and for in-house QMP or HACCP monitoring and verification. These include safety parameters for ready-to-eat products, container integrity for low acid and canned products, complete physical and sensory evaluation, as well as, specialized tests for pathogenic bacteria, pesticides, natural toxins, heavy metals, food additives, antibiotics and other potential chemical contaminants.

In the area of seafood nutrition we provide a complete range of tests necessary to meet the requirements of Canada and the United States, as well as specialized tests to meet unique customer requirements. Tests include protein, ash, moisture, calories, total fat, fatty acids such as triglycerides, saturated fatty acids, unsaturated fatty acids, trans fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars, starch, dietary fibre, essential elements and vitamins.

Our staff has extensive experience in the physical and sensory evaluation of fish and fish products. Testing covers all aspects of product quality as required in the "Government Regulations" including all "Standard Tests", required of QMP importers. Seafood quality tests may be complemented by specialized analytical tests such as chemical quality indicators where available. Tests include sensory evaluation for decomposition and taint (including rancidity); physical evaluation of weights, contents, style and presentation claims; physical examination for filth, parasites, foreign material and workmanship defects; as well as specialized tests such as SPC, TVBN, indole, putrefactive amines, ethanol, etc.
